Biographical Info
Dr. John Marlow Starbuck founded the Starbuck Law Firm, LLC in Lafayette, IN. Since founding the Starbuck Law Firm LLC, Starbuck has worked in a variety of areas, including family law (divorce, custody), orders of protection, personal injury, and civil cases (contract disputes, collections, property disputes, quiet title actions).
Starbuck’s background includes having previously worked in the Tippecanoe County Public Defender’s office, at the Kightlinger & Gray law firm, and at the Cass County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney’s office. As a Public Defender, Starbuck worked on Child In Need of Services (CHINS), Termination of Parental Rights (TPR), and Appellate cases. At Kightlinger & Gray, Starbuck worked primarily in Insurance Defense and Personal Injury. As a Cass County Deputy Prosecutor, Starbuck supervised the IV-D office and three (3) child support caseworkers, made charging decisions, and prosecuted all juvenile delinquency cases, worked closely with juvenile probation, worked on the Child Protection Team, and also prosecuted selected felonies, including nonsupport of a dependent and high-level drug cases.
While attending the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, Starbuck completed internships at Indiana Legal Services, the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Office of the Attorney General in Licensing Enforcement.
Before attending law school, Starbuck earned his B.A. in Anthropology from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (now called Indiana University Indianapolis), an M.A. in Anthropology from Penn State, and a Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from Penn State. Starbuck completed post-doctoral research in
the Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics Imaging Analysis of the Craniofacial Complex Center at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, Indiana. Afterwards, Starbuck was a Visiting Lecturer in the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Indiana University Northwest in Gary,
Indiana. Next, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida.
At the University of Central Florida, Dr. Starbuck founded and supervised his own multi-disciplinary Image Analysis and Morphometrics Laboratory. Starbuck mentored and employed approximately forty (40) student researchers over a period of four (4) years. Dr. Starbuck’s cross-disciplinary academic and applied research used three-dimensional images and high-dimensional statistical techniques to quantify and evaluate craniofacial form to better understand how developmental perturbations, with known or unknown genetic origins, influence facial growth, development, and phenotypic form. Dr. Starbuck’s prior teaching efforts included introductory biological anthropology courses, fundamentals of bioanthropology, human growth and development, human variation, primates, laboratories on human origins and closely related species, and statistical courses for Master’s and Ph.D. students. Starbuck supervised numerous independent research projects for students that he mentored. Dr. Starbuck is published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals including Nature Scientific Reports, the Anatomical Record, the Journal of Archaeological Science, Clinical Anatomy, the American Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, the Australian Orthodontic Journal, Human Molecular Genetics, the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, the International Journal of Morphology, the Annals of Plastic Surgery, the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, the Journal of Contemporary Anthropology, and Forensic Science International. Outside of practice, Starbuck enjoys spending time with his wife and dogs, one of whom has special needs.
